These FRP structural members are manufactured as crossarms for the electrical power network. StepUp Composites has the exclusive rights to sell this factory reject, downgrade or surplus stock at greatly reduced prices. Despite their “reject” classification, they are structurally sound and are a high strength and light weight – ideal as fence posts or for many types of structures eg posts/joists for deck, trellis, arbor, pergola, swings/playground frame, garden beds or retaining walls. They can even be used as house stumps.
Defects can include
- Coating damage – they are coated with a grey plastic UV resistant membrane which can be compromised by areas missing the coating, or lumps, scrapes or non-adhesion. This is the most significant defect but only impacts the visual and UV aspects. Many members have no damage, and some packs can have minor or major coating damage interspersed.
- Hole size and position variations (holes are often ignored and all connections made by screwing into the material)
- Position/strength of internal reinforcing blocks (again this has no impact on DIY applications for the members)
- End caps may or may not be present (this is cosmetic and suitable endcaps can be sourced if required)
Selling complete packs only – consisting of
* 100x100x5mm (50 pieces per pack normally) and 125x125x6.5mm (40 pieces per pack normally)
* Square Hollow Section with internal reinforcing at each hole position and plastic endcaps
* Lengths available normally 1800 to 3600mm (packs can be all same length – or have some or large variation within the pack)
* Grey plastic coating gives high resistance to UV and outdoor weathering for extreme long life and easy cleaning (see defects section)
* Material is FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) – high strength and will not rust, rot or be eaten by termites.
* Can be concreted into the ground
* Can be cut using diamond blade.
* High screw hold capacity (eg 14G Galv or SS wood screws)
* Markings can easily be removed with solvent
* Weight 12 – 25kg each (depending on size and length)
